How Much Mission: Impossible Fallout Made On Opening Night

The Mission: Impossible franchise is that rare movie series that just keeps getting better each time out. This weekend sees the release of the sixth and latest entry in the franchise, Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Christopher McQuarrie's film has the most insane stunts and intense action in the franchise, and it may be the best IMF adventure yet. It looks like audiences are rewarding that with a franchise best opening. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is off to a great start at the box office, earning a record $6 million in preview screenings Thursday night.

The $6 million earned from Thursday's preview screenings at 3,300 locations easily bests the $4 million in previews earned by the film's predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation in 2015. In addition to being a franchise best preview performance, the $6 million is also a record for star Tom Cruise. This film deserves to be seen on as big of a screen as possible and of that $6 million, $1 million came from IMAX screenings. This is a nice start for the action extravaganza that will easily win the weekend as Mission: Impossible - Fallout is expected to pull in $50 to $65 million, according to Variety. If it does land in the upper end of that range from 4,386 locations this weekend and surpasses Mission: Impossible 2's $57.8 million, Christopher McQuarrie's film will have scored the best opening weekend in the history of the 22-year-old franchise.

Mission: Impossible Fallout is being buoyed by franchise best reviews, currently sitting at 98% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. So Ethan Hunt's latest mission is clearly and rightfully the main event this weekend, but it isn't the only show in town, as the only other wide release is hoping for a bit of counter-programming success. Teen Titans Go! to the Movies debuted to $1 million in Thursday night previews on its way to a projected $13-$19 million this weekend. That animated DC adventure is also enjoying favorable reviews, proving that as we get ready to enter the last month of summer, it is a great weekend to go to the movies.

Although Mission: Impossible Fallout is clearly performing well and off to a good start, one has to wonder what impact, if any, the MoviePass outage last night had on box office receipts because the service was down for many subscribers during preview screening times for the summer blockbuster. Overall this summer, moviegoing is up 10.5% to $3.21 billion as of July 24.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout is in theaters now, and it is definitely a mission worth accepting.
