Zoe Saldana Recalls Anton Yelchin Being Nervous To Do Star Trek Justice

A decade ago this week, Star Trek brought the legendary sci-fi franchise that Gene Roddenberry created for audiences in the 60s into a more modern context. And the cast and crew involved knew just how daunting a task that was, especially the actor playing the young version of Ensign Pavel Chekov, the late Anton Yelchin.

Anton Yelchins thoughts were conveyed by fellow Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana in a new documentary entitled Love, Antonsha, which reflects on the untimely passing of Yelchin, and the legacy his brief, but luminous career has left behind. Saldana recalled the young mans bout of nerves as follows:

He was so aware about the importance of Star Trek and the message that Star Trek had. He understood why it managed to live for such a long time, and he was nervous about being a part of it and giving it that justice.

When the character of Pavel Chekov was initially created, it was in the name of the brand of sci-fi optimism that Gene Roddenberry and his Star Trek brand were always meant to uphold. So obviously, rebooting such a staple of pop culture in the present day is a task that has to be handled very carefully.

This was especially true with Chekov, a Russian member of the multi-ethnicity crew of the USS Enterprise that signaled not only would the Cold War raging in reality eventually end, but that Russia would have a place on the greater world stage in the future. While that prophecy would be fulfilled, Anton Yelchin obviously still felt the weight of keeping this character true to his roots when making Star Trek with J.J. Abrams.

Anton Yelchins fears about doing justice to Ensign Chekov is just one of the many stories populating Love Antonsha, which the projects director, Garret Price, apparently didnt have a hard time gathering. While talking to EW about the projects status, as well as sharing the clip of Zoe Saldana recounting her co-star with this beautiful story, Price mentioned that about 60 different A-listers had contributed in some way or another to this collection of memories. And the best part was they didnt need to be convinced all that hard to say yes.

Its not difficult to see why Anton Yelchin is so fondly remembered, and that extends even to the Star Trek franchise itself. While he was able to make the first three films in the modern reboot series, theres still a bit of a discussion as to how his role will be filled, should Star Trek 4 move forward.

A fourth film is a rather questionable prospect at this time, but should any movement be made, its safe to assume that J.J. Abrams previous remarks about how both Anton Yelchin and Chekov are irreplaceable in the Star Trek universe will inform the decision that pertains to the helm of the Enterprise in its continuing mission.

Love Antonsha will be released into theaters at some point this summer. As soon as we have more information as to when to expect that film, well report back, as well as update our 2019 release schedule accordingly.

The Very Important Deadpool 2 Scene That Almost Didnt Happen Because Of Technical Difficulties

The following contains spoilers for Deadpool 2.

Deadpool 2 had more great moments than you could count, but one of the best almost didn't happen. The end credits sequence of the film is getting a lot of, well, credit, as being one of the best among the crop of superhero movies, but quite possibly the best moment was when Deadpool uses Cable's time travel device to go into the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and assassinate that version of Deadpool. It turns out, they had trouble getting the scene they needed to use, for the insane reason that the movie was actually shot on film. According to Ryan Reynolds...

We had a dick of a time trying to get the actual raw footage though from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The movie was shot on film, it wasn't shot on digital so it was harder to get. We were sitting there on the Fox lot, the exact piece of the movie we need had been damaged on whatever the transfer was, so we had to go to some backup which was in some vault somewhere in the middle of the country, the United States, and we ended up finally, at the last second inputting it into the movie. For me, I was literally losing sleep over it though, I was thinking 'oh my god, how are we going to do this, am I going to have to call Hugh and ask him to shoot this chunk that looks exactly like a movie he's already done?' I can't think of a worse hell for a human being to do.

X-Men Origins Wolverine is less than a decade old, but it's old enough that the way movies were shot then is quite different than it is today. If the film had been shot digitally then getting the scene they needed would have been no trouble at all, but film is fragile, and there aren't just a million copies of movies shot that way sitting around. This meant that getting the scene they needed to insert into Deadpool 2 wasn't all that easy.

There is an almost unfortunate side effect of the fact that Deadpool 2 was able to get the scene they needed. Fans have wanted to see Ryan Reynolds Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine on screen together ever since the first Deadpool movie came out, and if they had actually had to ask Hugh Jackman to redo the scene from Origins, it could have technically happened.

While Ryan Reynolds thinks that having to recreate a nearly ten-year-old movie would have been hell, it turns out, hilariously, that if it had come to that, only Hugh Jackman would have needed to look as he did back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds tells the Empire Film Podcast, that he wouldn't have had to have his mouth sewn closed again.

Ironically, my side was fine. His side, the one shot we needed of him going, you know, 'Wade?' as he's looking at the bizarre Baraka-pool thing, we just didn't have.

In the end, the scene worked out and it only increased the fun in what was already a hilarious end credits scene. If you want to go see it again, Deadpool 2 is in theaters now.




"Deadpool" and Guardians of the Galaxy were both huge risks that ultimately paid off, big time. As a film, it's nearly perfect. The film does exactly what it needed to do, and more. It introduces Deadpool, sets up his character, and gets you to like him if you didn't already. The non linear narrative was refreshing to see in a superhero film.

Margot Robbie has had an eclectic resume over the past several years, playing characters as varied as Harley Quinn, Tonya Harding, Tarzan's Jane, a rabbit named Flopsy and, in an upcoming project, Queen Elizabeth I. Each of these movies has given Margot Robbie a different look, but it is in Mary Queen of Scots that Robbie dives deep and is the most unrecognizable. Don't take my word for it. Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan star in the new film, which will follow the life of Mary Stuart and her relationship with her Elizabeth I. Both are women in a male-dominated world of politics. However, Mary Stuart grew up in France and was briefly married to the Dauphin of France while Elizabeth I grew up in England and succeeded the throne after Mary Tudor's death. The relationship between Elizabeth 1 and Mary Stuart was tumultuous, as the latter attempted to take over the formers throne at one point, leading to distrust and Mary Stuart's eventual beheading years later.

Saoirse Ronan is on board to play Mary Stuart, who will be attempting to take on the English and claim the throne there. Margot Robbie is playing Elizabeth I. It's a little unfair that all of the attention has been on Robbie when Ronan is the movie's namesake, but just look at Robbie! Her stern face and that hair and makeup are totally different than what we've seen from the actress. Ronan's hair is obviously different too, but her period look is far more understated.

We've already seen a trailer for the new movie that highlights the regal way the two actresses carry themselves. Period dramas are generally always at least somewhat in vogue and we expect this one to get quite a bit of attention in the coming months. If you haven't seen the full trailer, you can take a look.

We're starting to get into the portion of the year when movies with awards potential are being released in full force. Flicks like A Star is Born and First Man are already out and a slew of other hopefuls will be released in the coming months. Mary Queen of Scots will be officially hitting theaters on December 7 around the other holiday releases. To take a look at what else is coming out before the end of the year, keep an eye on the full schedule.

As for the Oscars, the ceremony has already decided to drop its idea for a popular movies category, and we'll have to wait and see what critical winners eventually emerge from the pack. The Oscars will be announced on February 24, 2019.

What You Need to Remember About Fantastic Beasts Before Crimes Of Grindelwald

This week the Harry Potter universe gets a little bit bigger with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. While not yet the sprawling epic that the Harry Potter series was, Fantastic Beasts is already pretty deep into the mythology with only two movies. The last film introduced a ton of new characters and plot threads that fans will see continue in the sequel, so it's understandable if you need a little catching up.

The Fantastic Beasts series follows Newt Scamander decades before Harry Potter was ever born and the magizoologist finds himself in the middle of a war between the Wizarding World and the dark wizard Grindelwald. Being the sequel, the movie draws on a lot of elements that were set up in the first film, in addition to some things people may remember from the Harry Potter films. It might not be as easy as casting a spell, but here are all the things you need to know before catching Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in theaters.

Newt Scamander, Lover Of All (Magic) AnimalsThe main protagonist of these films is Newt Scamander, a Hogwarts dropout who has a passion for studying and protecting magical animals. He writes a book (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) that a young Harry Potter will one day read while at Hogwarts. Newt was working on the book in the first movie, but it's published by the time the sequel begins. The awkward but good-hearted wizard likes animals more than people, and protects endangered or hurt species in his magical briefcase until he can release them into the wild. They also help get him out of plenty of scrapes, but not even nifflers can help get him off of Grindelwald's hit list.

Tina's Back In The FieldFans would do well to remember Tina Goldstein, one of the four main protagonists in the first movie. Tina is an auror of MACUSA, the American wizard community's version of the UK's Ministry of Magic. At the beginning of Fantastic Beasts, Tina was dismissed from her position for assaulting a No-maj (non-magical person), but she was reinstated after she aided in the capture of Grindelwald. When The Crimes of Grindelwald picks up, Tina is on a new mission in Paris and hasn't seen Newt since they parted ways at the end of the last movie.

Jacob Had His Memory of Wizards ErasedJacob Kowalski has the distinct honor of being the only non-magical human in the Harry Potter series. Jacob had the simple dream of opening his own bakery before a chance encounter with Newt sent him on a journey through a magical portion of the world he never knew existed. Sadly, Jacob voluntarily had his adventures with Newt erased from his memory to protect the Wizarding World's secrets, including the existence of Queenie Goldstein, Tina's sister and his budding romantic interest. Jacob is in Fantastic Beasts 2, but for what reason or how he gets his memory back is unknown until the flick hits theaters!

Credence Is Presumed DeadTechnically the MacGuffin from the first movie, Credence was an incredibly powerful and dangerous Obscurial, a magical child who represses his or her magical energy into a dark, parasitic force. Credence grew up with an abusive and bigoted adoptive mother who believed in witches and "evil" magic, so Credence subconsciously buried his magical energy for the majority of his life. He eventually snapped, killing a bunch of people before he was cornered by MACUSA. Newt and Tina wanted to help him, but a disguised Grindelwald tried to manipulate him for his own purposes in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Ultimately, Credence seemingly perished at the end of the film, but eagle-eyed viewers spotted evidence he might have lived. Fans will find Credence traveling with a circus trying to find his real parents in the sequel.

Newt's Complicated Past Comes BackFantastic Beasts didn't dive too deeply into Newt's backstory, but the flick did offer some hints that he had some issues. For one thing, he was expelled from Hogwarts after taking the fall for an experiment done by Leta Lestrange (related to Bellatrix Lestrange) that accidentally harmed another student. Newt was in love with Leta and never really got over her, which must make Thanksgiving at the Scamander house pretty awkward because she's engaged to his brother, Theseus. The older Scamander sibling is a war hero, having fought in World War I, while Newt is seen as the disappointing black sheep of the family. Both Leta and Theseus have a role to play in Fantastic Beasts 2 and assumably the coming sequels.

Grindelwald Is In CustodyThe big bad of the franchise is Grindelwald, a dark wizard who wants the magical community to rise up out of hiding and over the muggle world by force. He's sort of like a proto-Voldemort, but he led a deadly campaign with a legion of followers. In the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, he was masquerading as Percival Graves of MACUSA before his identity was revealed by Newt. Grindelwald was placed into custody and imprisoned, but you just can't keep a good evil wizard down. It's no surprise that Grindelwald will be breaking out of prison to resume his war in The Crimes of Grindelwald sequel.

Dumbledore And Grindelwald Have HistoryOne of the big draws of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the introduction of young Albus Dumbledore. The fan-favorite character is back and he recruits Newt to take down Grindelwald on his behave because he "can't make a move," in Dumbledore's own words. The history between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is complicated. The two of them were very close in their younger years, the two of them bonding over their genius and quest for power. However, this ultimately resulted in the death of Dumbledore's sister, splitting the two of them up for good. It's also been strongly suggested that Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald and the falling out deeply affected him. The two of them will eventually engage in a legendary duel that decides the fate of the war, but Dumbledore seems a long way off from making any moves.

The Mirror Of Erised ReturnsHere's a flashback from the earliest days of Harry Potter. The Mirror of Erised is a magical artifact that allows the used to see their hearts deepest desire. For Harry, this was his parents, and for old Dumbledore, it was "socks." Young Dumbledore look will be a little more open. He can be seen looking in the mirror in a trailer, seeing the face of his old friend/flame/foe Grindelwald. If you find yourself confused as to why Dumbledore is staring at this mirror in the movie, just remember it's not the first time we've seen it.

Boggart Class Is In SessionNewt loves magical creatures, but I'm curious what his thoughts are on boggarts. Boggarts are shape-shifting creatures that take on the appearance of whatever most frightens the person who encounters it. If you are scared of spiders, then it will transform into a giant spider and no one knows what a boggart's true form looks like. Harry Potter learned how to defend against one at Hogwarts, and we can see a young Newt learning that very same lesson in the trailer. Dumbledore was his professor and we will likely gain more insight into Newt's character after seeing what he most fears.

The Ministry of MagicJust when you were starting to get used to MACUSA as the authority on magical law, here comes the Ministry of Magic again. The Crimes of Grindelwald is capturing a bit more of those Harry Potter feels by returning to familiar things and places like Hogwarts and that includes the Ministry. The Ministry is the government for British wizards and we've seen that they have a presence in the movie, courtesy of some trailers. The Ministry is keeping an eye on Dumbledore and Newt, but it's unclear how strong a presence it will have in the narrative.
