Melissa McCarthy And Her Rabbits Are Oscars' Weirdest Moment So Far

If there are two things you can count on The Oscars to deliver, it's weird moments of comedy and interesting outfits. So leave it to this year's fast and furious paced show to show us a moment that showcases both of those things in one, hilarious package. Submitted for your approval, Melissa McCarthy, wearing a very interesting and bunny laden dress to present tonight's award for Best Costume Design alongside Brian Tyree Henry.

Both McCarthy and Henry were dressed rather interestingly to present one of the awards that occurred in the earlier portion of the evening, but the Best Actress nominee had the weirder side of the couture equation. Blame The Favourite, one of the Best Costume Design nominees this evening, as the film's obsession with rabbits rubbed off on Melissa McCarthy's outfit, which had rabbits on its train, rabbits on the sleeves, and even a bunny puppet on her hand that stole part of the show.

It only gets weirder from that point though, as McCarthy also donned Queen Elizabeth I's cropped red hair from Mary Queen Of Scots, with Brian Tyree Henry complimenting his Favourite dress with a touch of Mary Poppins Returns and Black Panther. A field's worth of nominees, and a night's worth of laughs, all packed into two outfits worn by hysterical people.

But you really need to watch the video of the presentation to get the full effect of Melissa McCarthy's absurd outfit, as she really used that bunny puppet to the greatest effect:

To wear the rabbits is one thing, as that's just par for the course as a fun reference. However, having a hand puppet of a rabbit, as well as using that puppet in her hands, with that straight of a face, is what pushes the gag over into hysterical territory. And you know points have to go to Brian Tyree Henry for also being able to present this award, with that sort of madness going on beside him.

While The Favourite lost the award to Ruth E. Carter's groundbreaking and well deserved win for Black Panther, it certainly nabbed a memorable moment at The Oscars tonight. So whomever was responsible for such a hysterical choice of wardrobe and props, take a bow; because tonight, you are one of our favourites.

How Does One Return The Soul Stone? We Asked The Avengers: Endgame Writers

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. If you have not yet seen the film, read on at your own risk!While we dont actually see it play out, Captain America takes on one hell of a mission at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Needing to shut down off-shoots in reality, he volunteers to travel in time and put the Infinity Stones back where they belong ultimately also deciding to live out a normal life with Peggy Carter and fully experience the second half of the 20th century. Most of the trip is pretty straight forward, from bringing the Tesseract back to the secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in 1970, to bringing the Power Stone back to Morag in 2014, but of the individual six missions, the returning of the Soul Stone would seem to be a strange and unique challenge.

As audiences will remember, unlike most of the Infinity Stones (which could be taken by the Avengers provided they had proper containment), the Soul Stone was a bit trickier to acquire. Rather than simply being recovered from an amulet or extracted with a special device, obtaining the ingot not only required a trip to the mysterious planet Vormir, but also making an important sacrifice. Knowing this, an interesting question is raised about Captain Americas final mission: how does one go about returning the Soul Stone?

This is a matter that vigorously rolled around in my head following my first screening of Avengers: Endgame, and I was fortunate enough to recently have the opportunity to ask the perfect people about it. Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely for the latest episode of our HeroBlend podcast, and I made it a personal priority to ask them about the Soul Stone. It was a question that they not only appreciated, but also had an answer for, explaining,

Stephen McFeely: It's a good question. I think it is an everlasting exchange.Christopher Markus: There's a slot.Stephen McFeely: That's right. Yeah, that's right. It's like an old time bank. It's a pneumatic tube.Christopher Markus: You put it back, but you don't get anything in return. It's not like a pawn shop.

There was some hope among fans that Captain America returning the Soul Stone to Vormir would potentially mean the resurrection of Black Widow, who died so that the Avengers could acquire the key treasure during their time heist, but thats evidently not the case. While Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely's answer was a tad jokey, it seems that once that particular trade is made, there are no takebacks - so despite Cap making the effort to fix the timeline, that particular death is permanent.

This information also seems to confirm that the upcoming Black Widow movie will definitely be a period piece that will be set prior to the events of Avengers: Endgame. This is something that has been rumored for a while now, but if the titular heroine is most definitely dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe then there really arent any other story options available to the filmmakers.

Of course, there is also still another major component that needs to be discussed here, which is that Captain America returning the Soul Stone would presumably also result in a reunion with his World War II nemesis, Johann Schmidt a.k.a. the Red Skull. Because of the way things play out in Avengers: Endgame, its a situation that is simply left to our imaginations, but one has to figure that Steve Rogers would be pretty damn surprised to discover the fate of the former head of Hydra following his handling of the Tesseract in 1945.

That being said, the writers of the latest Marvel Studios blockbuster definitely wish it was a reunion that they could have somehow included in the movie. After all, in addition to writing both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, they also penned the scripts for the entire Captain America trilogy. I asked Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely if the 2019 film had ever included a scene where Cap and Red Skull were reunited, and they explained what happened thusly:

Christopher Markus: That was hard for me personally to get over.Stephen McFeely: That's right. That's true. I remember.Christopher Markus: Because I very much wanted like, 'How are we not getting Cap into space to see the Red Skull? And it just otherwise was not the story to tell for Cap, but it is extremely tempting.

And while one could hope that perhaps someday well get to see a movie that features Captain Americas version of Infinity Watch, it sadly sounds like thats never going to happen. This is specifically because directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed Chris Evans retirement playing the character, and thats most definitely a film that you couldnt make without him. Perhaps the actor will eventually change his mind and decided that he really misses the character, but for now audiences should really just feel satisfied with the perfect send-off that he gets in the new film.

Captain Marvel: What We Know So Far About Nick Fury's Past

After being delayed twice following it being announced as part of the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 slate, Captain Marvel is finally hitting theaters next year, giving audiences one last self-contained Marvel movie before Avengers 4 wraps up this era of the franchise two months later. Obviously Captain Marvel's primary purpose is to introduce Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, who was teased in the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene, but the movie is also a big deal for longtime MCU player and former S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury, as we'll learn what he was like in the 1990s, long before he was neck-deep in the world of superheroics. Fury hasn't talked about his past that much on the big screen, but enough details have been revealed over the last decade that we figured it'd be a good time to go over what we know about his past, before he sneaked into Tony Stark mansion in the Iron Man post-credits scene.

Unlike his comic book counterparts, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury didn't fight in World War II and has not been kept alive for over a century by the Infinity Formula. However, he still has been an integral member of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a long time. Fury joined the army as a young man, eventually rising to the rank of colonel, and after spending some time in the CIA, he was recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1980s, which was led by Alexander Pierce at the time (who we now know was secretly serving HYDRA). Fury eventually became the Deputy Chief of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Bogota station, and it was there that he proved his leadership mettle. When Colombian rebels took several political officers hostages at the country's embassy, including Pierce's daughter, Fury came up with a plan to get the hostages out. Pierce nixed the idea, preferring to negotiate with the rebels, but Fury ignored those orders and implemented his plan anyway.Fortunately, all the hostages were freed, and despite being disobeyed, Pierce was impressed with how Fury handled the crisis and promoted him to Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. when he stepped down to take a spot on the World Security Council.

Following this promotion, Nick Fury's life is a little hazier, but there are a few spots we can fill in. Thanks to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, we know that part of Fury's job included looking for and securing dangerous artifacts around the world, like the mystical Darkhold book. Fury also recruited and/or trained a number of prominent S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including Phil Coulson, John Garrett (who, like Alexander Pierce, ended up serving HYDRA) and Clint Barton, the latter of whom brought Natasha Romanoff into the spy organization despite Fury originally ordering him to take her out. At some point, Fury also lost his eye due to putting misplaced trust in someone, hence why he wears the eyepatch and is hesitant to share too much information with people. But arguably Fury's biggest accomplishment was putting together the Avengers Initiative, which would bring together enhanced and other special individuals to protect humanity from global threats. As we now know, Fury had the right idea.

Which brings us to Captain Marvel, which takes place approximately a little over a decade before Nick Fury approached Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative. At this stage of his life, Fury still has two functional eyes, but according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, he believes the best years of his career are over due to the Cold War concluding. Fury hasn't had any experience with superheroes or aliens when Captain Marvel starts, but that will change when he crosses paths with Carol Danvers, the Kree and the Skrulls. To no one's surprise, Marvel is keeping Captain Marvel plot details close to the proverbial chest, so outside of some leaked set photos of Samuel L. Jackson interacting with Brie Larson, we have no idea what specifically is in store for Fury in this movie. However, I can provide a few educated guesses.

First off, it's a good bet that during Captain Marvel, we will see Nick Fury lose his eye, and I suspect a Skrull will be responsible. Remember, the Skrulls are shapeshifters, so rather than being legitimately betrayed by someone he knew, maybe a Skrull disguised itself as said individual, and when Fury learns what's happened, a fight breaks out and Fury loses his 20/20 vision in the process. But more importantly, Fury's time with Carol is almost certainly what will be the catalyst for him starting the Avengers Initiative. After seeing what she's capable of, Fury will realize that Earth will one day need other superheroes to defend it when mankind isn't up to the the task.

I'd be remiss if I also didn't mention the pager that Nick Fury activated in the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene before he turned to dust as a result of the Thanos snap. The pager displayed the Captain Marvel insignia, so we can presume that Carol or someone connected to her will give the device to him in Captain Marvel. As for why Fury activated the pager in Infinity War and not during the Chitauri invasion or Ultron's attack on Sokovia, there's an Avengers 4 theory online suggesting that in Captain Marvel, Fury either sees or learns details about the future and knew about Thanos' endgame ahead of time, hence why he looked more focused than shocked upon seeing Maria Hill disappear. This is also the reason why he's been so invested in Tony Stark realizing his full potential; he knew that Tony would be key to saving the universe. Whether this theory is true or not, make no mistake, Captain Marvel will be important when it comes to further understanding Fury and his motives, so if you're a fan of the character, you won't want to miss the penultimate Phase 3 movie.

Over the course of the last few years, Chris Pine has remained a consistent fixture as an action hero in the realms of fantasy and science fiction. He is known for portraying swashbuckling badasses like Star Trek's James Kirk and Wonder Woman's Steve Trevor, but he found a new fantasy character in the form of A Wrinkle in Time's Dr. Alex Murry. That said, the difference between his new character and those earlier ones extends far beyond the source material that he is jumping to, as Pine recently sat down with CinemaBlend and explained that Alex Murry is a far more intellectual, science-oriented hero than men like Kirk or Trevor. Pine told us:

I think in that he's a real pure intellect. He's one of these people I always looked up to who whose mind works so quickly and with such facility. He can balance humungous ideas in his brain. So yeah, his great weapon is the speed of his mind.

Those qualities are arguably far more important for a character like Alex Murry than James Kirk or Steve Trevor. A Wrinkle in Time deals with some pretty lofty scientific ideas, and he's at the forefront of them all. There's no Spock around to help him sift through the material, and no Diana Prince to explain the magic and mythology. In the world of A Wrinkle in Time, he is the brains of the operation, and his mind serves as "his great weapon." Sometimes that's the most powerful tool at one's disposal.

It is also worth mentioning that someone like Dr. Alex Murry needs to rely on his wits and his intellect based on the tone of a movie like A Wrinkle in Time. Ava DuVernay's Disney adventure is not a traditional action romp like many of Chris Pine's other adventure films, which means his portrayal of the character cannot rely on his typical cocky bravado. In other words, don't expect to see Alex Murry throwing any punches, crack wise in the face of danger or seduce an oddly-colored alien woman in this film. He is a thinking man's hero who leads with his brain, though in the movie, it's up to his children and their friend Calvin to ultimately rescue him.
