Marvel Stars And Filmmakers React To Stan Lee's Death

Stan Lee may be gone, but his legacy will last forever. His full name, "Mr. Lee," the hashtag "#Excelsior," "Marvel," "Spider-Man," and "Rest In Peace" were all trending terms on Monday, November 12 as news of his death spread across the internet.

Fans are mourning worldwide for the 95-year-old Marvel Comics' icon, but Stan Lee's death is a particular blow for the stars who were lucky enough to work with him and bring Marvel characters to life. Many of those actors and filmmakers took to social media to share thanks, memories, and condolences. Let's start with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Feige helped introduce many fans to Lee's characters through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he was quick to honor the legend:

The MCU began 10 years ago with Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. brought the character to life, and he paid tribute to the real Marvel hero:

Chris Evans plays Captain America in the MCU, and he previously played the Human Torch in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie; Stan Lee had actually named Evans the Marvel star with whom he had bonded the most. Here's Evans' heartfelt reaction to the loss of his friend:

Stan Lee always has a fun cameo in Marvel movies. Joe and Anthony Russo have directed four Marvel Studios movies so far: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and next spring's Avengers 4. The Russos also reacted to Lee's passing:

Jurassic World Box Office: Fallen Kingdom Repeats During A Mediocre Weekend

Given that J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened to larger-than-expected numbers and had only modest competition this week, it should come to the surprise of nobody that it is once again number one at the box office. What's unfortunate is that the numbers won't exactly blow anyone away - and that pretty much goes for every movie on the board. Check out the full Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis.

After making just short of $150 million in its opening weekend, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom fell nearly 60 percent in week two - which is not a fall-off number that Universal Pictures will be super happy with. That being said, everything is relative, because the reality is that the movie is already one of the biggest blockbusters released so far in 2018. Its weekend haul has once again allowed it to vault up the charts, as its $264.8 million total domestically is enough to make it the fifth most successful release since the beginning of January. That being said, it's hard to say how high it will climb given that it is still behind monster hits like Black Panther ($699.8 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($672.5 million), Incredibles 2 ($439.7 million) and Deadpool 2 ($310.4 million).

Clearly Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is doing well here at home, but the real story is its performance abroad. The movie was released a few weeks early into some international markets, and it has been making some crazy money. To date the domestic total makes up less than 30 percent of the whole, as worldwide it has thus far made $932.4 million. It is guaranteed to become the third billion dollar hit of 2018 - which is pretty amazing by itself. Among the newcomers it was Stefano Sollima Sicario: Day of the Soldado that made the most money, though it wasn't quite enough to face off against Hollywood's two most recent blockbusters. It had to settle for third place, making over $20 million less than Brad Bird's Incredibles 2, but the performance at the very least does look favorable when compared to the original Sicario. Despite having rising star Denis Villeneuve at the helm and a cast including Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro, the first movie trickled into theaters in fall 2015, and while never being released in more than 2,620 theaters at a time it never made more than $12.1 million in a weekend or rose above third place. The sequel, released by Sony Pictures, is on a better pace, and it will be interesting to see where it ends up by the time it's done with its theatrical run.

Overall, the real success story may be the performances by Charles Stone III's Uncle Drew and Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju. The former, a comedy starring a crew of professional basketball players in old age makeup, may have landed fourth place, but it did so earning better reviews than Sicario: Day of the Soldado and earned an "A" from CinemaScore. As for the latter, the Bollywood hit was only in limited release over the weekend - just over 350 theaters - but it still landed eighth place with an average of over $7000 per theater.

Next week we are once again back to big releases, as two big franchises will be going head to head. Peyton Reed's Ant-Man & The Wasp is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first chapter since Avengers: Infinity War, and audiences will get to watch the world go to hell with Gerard McMurray's prequel The First Purge. While superhero movies are everywhere, there are certain franchises that stand out among the competition. Chief among them is Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool movies, which shattered expectations by releasing an R-Rated, fourth wall breaking, comedic romp. Deadpool 2 arrived in theaters a few months ago, once again surprising the fandom with every turn. One of the most shocking moments is when the X-Force members all die gruesomely during their first mission, despite trailers showing the team in action. Actor Lewis Tan played Shatterstar in his brief cameo, and recently revealed that he's hoping to return for the X-Force movie. Why? Because of that time traveling post-credits scene.

You're going to see more of my character in the X-Force film ... that's what it's looking like. Thankfully, Deadpool went back and had a little time machine that he stole, so in the post-credits scene he brought back Peter, and it's assumed that we're all going to come back as well. Hopefully he brings back Shatterstar and everybody, because the fans really enjoyed that scene, and I get a lot of attention online about how they thought it was one of the best scenes in the film.

While we only saw Wade Wilson saving the likes of Peter and Vanessa in Deadpool 2's post-credits scene, it's not beyond the real of possibility for the Merc with The Mouth to have actually helped his entire team. After all, it was Deadpool's poor planning that resulted in Shatterstar, Terry Crews' Bedlam, and Bill Skarsgard's Zeitgeist all dying in hilariously gross ways.

Lewis Tan's comments come from his conversation with Syfy at the Saturn Awards, and show how the actor is eager to return to 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise. While he wasn't in much of Deadpool 2, Tan is the first actor to play Shatterstar in live-action. As such, he's hoping to return for the X-Force movie, especially since he was in the titular team's original lineup.

Although Lewis Tan seems available to play Shatterstar in X-Force, Terry Crews and Bill Skarsgard might not be so eager. They're both very busy guys, and filming a superhero movie is typically a major time commitment. But considering the massive popularity of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds may be able to get the full cast back-- if that's what X-Force even calls for.

Shatterstar isn't the only superhero name that has been surrounding Lewis Tan lately. The actor has been going in for meetings at DC, with fans left wondering what project he could join. Many believe he'd be the perfect actor for Chris McKay's Nightwing movie, given his background in martial arts. If Tan managed to book both X-Force and Nightwing, he could become a bonafide movie star in no time.

Netflix Is Starting To Change Its Mind About Theatrical Releases

Netflix may soon join the ranks of having Oscar-winning films under its belt. 2018 marked the year that the streaming service tied with HBO in Emmy wins after years of highly-acclaimed original series releases. Now the company has made a case for film recognition by backing the projects of masterful directors, including Alfonso Cuarn and the Coen Brothers. The studio is now also officially giving three of their releases exclusive runs in theaters before placing them on its streaming service.

Netflix initially planned on simultaneously releasing its award hopefuls in theaters and for streaming, but theaters were understandably concerned. Why would Netflix users pay admission for a ticket to see a movie when it's already waiting for them in their queue at home? Of course, giving one's full attention to a film on the big screen and an at-home watch are completely different experiences, but convenience would sway most in favor of streaming the titles. According to The New York Times, Netflix is cooperating with these concerns and will give its movies Roma, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Bird Box some time in theaters before moving them to the streaming platform.

The films will get a limited release period of one to three weeks in theaters to give them each a chance to make box office numbers and garner the attention of the Academy and Hollywood talent to work with them on future projects. Depending on how well the movies do commercially, Netflix expects the select theaters to keep them in their line-up once they hit the streaming platform as well. This compromise hasn't fared well with big theater chains such as AMC and Regal, which still insist upon a 90-day exclusivity period, but maybe the releases could still end up on their rosters.

Gravity's Alfonso Cuarn both penned and directed his Mexico-set passion project inspired by his childhood. Critics who have seen it along the festival circuit have been calling it a masterpiece not to be missed on the big screen. The film is a deeply-emotional chronicle of a year in the life of a family living in Mexico City in the '70s. The film is set to come to theaters on November 21 before hitting Netflix on December 14.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a six-part western anthology from the Coen Brothers starring the likes of James Franco and Liam Neeson. For fans of the filmmakers behind cult hits including Fargo, The Big Lebowski and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, it has certainly earned a shot at the big screen. Bird Box similarly has a star-studded cast as it stars Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich and Lil Rel Howery. The Quiet Place-esque thriller has Bullock hiding and protecting her family and fellow survivors from an unseen threat that can manifest itself into one's darkest fears if seen.

Unlike Roma's near-month theater exclusivity, Buster Scruggs will have theatrical engagements starting on November 8 before it hits Netflix on November 16 and Bird Box will premiere in select theaters on December 13 before its December 21 Netflix debut.
