New Ready Player One Footage Gives Us A First Look At Anorak

Whatever your life may be like on Earth in the year 2045 in Ready Player One, when entering the pop culture-filled virtual reality world known as the OASIS, you can become whoever you want to be and build a different life for yourself. Even OASIS's creator, James Halliday, crafted his own unique identity: Anorak. With the Ready Player One movie a month away from hitting theaters, new footage has come out giving us our first look at Halliday's Anorak interacting with Parzival, the avatar of the main protagonist, Wade Watts.

In the Ready Player One theatrical adaptation, James Halliday is being played by Mark Rylance, making this his third collaboration with director Steven Spielberg. Halliday has already died when Ready Player One begins, but by establishing an Easter egg hunt before passing away to whom the winner will be rewarded ownership of the OASIS and Halliday's fortune, his influence is still being felt from beyond the grave. Not only that, but his Anorak persona still exists within the OASIS, and you can see him in the above screenshot passing along a key to Wade Watts' Parzival. Folks who've already read the original Ready Player One novel by Ernest Cline likely know what's happening here, but for those who are going into the movie blind, we won't delve into spoiler territory. What isn't spoiler-y to say is that Anorak looks like he would be in good company alongside other bearded, powerful fictional characters like Merlin, Albus Dumbledore and Gandalf.

You can watch the new Ready Player One preview from Warner Bros below, which includes James Halliday's narration about the Easter egg hunt that has taken the OASIS by storm.

Along with Mark Rylance, Ready Player One's main cast includes Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Sam Cook/Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow and T.J. Miller as i-R0k. Just like the original book, the movie will depict Wade and numerous others in the OASIS trying to solve the clues left behind by James Halliday to find his treasured Easter egg. Unfortunately for Wade, as he makes more progress in the hunt, he'll find himself being targeted by the sinister corporation known as Innovative Online Industries, led by Nolan Sorrento, which wants to take over the OASIS for its own nefarious schemes.

The Hardest Scene To Shoot In Solo: A Star Wars Story

The trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story have shown all sorts of interesting and exciting sequences the film will have in store for us, but one of them was significantly more difficult for one actor than the rest. In a recent Twitter Q & A, actress Thandie Newton, who plays the role of Val in the new film, revealed that for her, the train sequence, that we've seen some of in the advertising, required a lot of work from her over the course of several weeks in order to get right. According to Newton...

It seems like it's one scene, it's the train sequence which, I'm not giving anything away by saying that, and the stuff that Val had to do in that sequence was shot over a number of weeks and I had so much stunt work to do to train for it and it looks amazing, but, wow, it was hard work.

We've seen some of the sequence that Thandie Newton mentions on Twitter in the trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story. We know that it is part of "the job" that Woody Harrelson is looking to put together a team for, though whether or not the train is the end goal, or a step in a larger plot, is not clear. It does look to potentially be the major action setpiece of the movie, which would explain why shooting it took several weeks to complete. Also, with train robberies being a classic part of many heist films, it makes some thematic sense for Star Wars to put its own particular spin on the trope. Rather than simply being a train, the vehicle is suspended above the ground and is flying past snowy mountains.

While certainly a lot of what we're seeing is CGI, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of real stuntwork involved for the actors. From what we've seen of Val in the lead up to Solo, she's been working with Woody Harrelson's Beckett for some time, so she's supposed to be an accomplished criminal. This means that her stunt work doesn't simply need to be "good enough," it needs to look like she's been doing it for a long time and is an expert at breaking into moving trains.

While most of us have to wait to see the finished product, the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story took place last week and the initial impressions of the movie are favorable. While not everybody loved it, it seems that most at least enjoyed it, which is good news for the film that went through more than its share of turmoil behind the scenes. The rest of us will get to see Val in all her glory starting May 25.

Why Winnie The Poohs Voice Is Slightly Different Than Normal In Christopher Robin

Marc Forster's Christopher Robin features a very different version of Winnie The Pooh and his cuddly friends than we are used to seeing on the big screen. While the characters have long lived in the world of 2D animation (their last film released back in 2011), the new movie sees them not only rendered in 3D, but also looking more realistic than ever. It's a strangeness that's balanced out by familiar voices -- namely Jim Cummings as both Pooh and Tigger -- but as Cummings recently explained to me, you should notice that his version of the lead character in the feature is an altered take compared to his past performances:

[There's] this whole idea that Christopher grew up, and, if anything, it would be a little more sedate, a little more pulled back - because in the animated versions oftentimes Pooh's gone up in weather balloons in lightning storms, and fallen out of those balloons, and then landed in a tree, and falling 500 feet down, and now we're in the white water rapids. Oh, here comes the waterfall! So, you know, it's a little less bodacious all the way around. So that in and of itself is a bit of a buffer, brings you back down to Earth.

Jim Cummings has been voicing Winnie the Pooh for more than 30 years now, and his take on the character is iconic in pop culture. The opportunity to perform in Christopher Robin, however, offered up some very different circumstances and context, though, which led him to change the sound slightly. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jim Cummings this past weekend during the Los Angeles press day for the new movie, and he revealed this change while talking about his relationship with director Marc Forster and their work together.

In Christopher Robin, Ewan McGregor plays an adult version of the titular character, who has long forgotten his time playing in the Hundred Acre Woods and has started a family of his own. In that time Winnie The Pooh has aged as well, elegantly shown in his realistic appearance as a worn-down teddy bear, but he's still there for Christopher when he is in need -- reuniting with his old best friend when the former imaginative boy starts to prioritize his work over his wife and daughter. Audiences have never seen Pooh quite like this, and in side-by-side comparison the difference is recognizable.

Also important to note is that Jim Cummings certainly seems to have appreciated the opportunity to give a different kind of energy to Winnie The Pooh, as he had nothing but nice things to say about the approach for the project, and Marc Forster's vision. Said Cummings,

It's just such a beautiful idea. It wasn't done Roger Rabbit style where the actual cartoon characters are intermingling with... and as full blown cartoon characters - which was also groundbreaking and cool in its time. But this, with the technology is, I mean, my gosh. That's Pooh walking across the room. There's Tigger, there's Owl! They're all alive and kicking!
